Photographing and Casting Footwear Impressions at the Crime Scene

Instructor(s): Lesley Hammer, Hammer Forensics

Date: September 24, 2012 Milwaukee, WI

Many environmental and physical conditions are encountered at crime scenes, which can create casting challenges. Snow, mud and fine sand create a variety of circumstances that may call for adjustments to techniques to achieve optimal retrieval of impression detail. For instance, in snow, the impression may melt before the casting material hardens, fine sand may collapse, and mud impressions may be filled with water. In this presentation and workshop, photography, coating and casting techniques will be discussed and practiced. The casting methods will include dental stone, the addition of potassium sulfate to dental stone, and the use of sulfur, specifically the use of sulfur cement.

Recommended for: Any level of crime scene physical evidence collection training, however competence with photography equipment (camera, tripod, flash) is recommended. Participants will need to bring camera kit to class and dress for the outdoors and casting.  $175.00        www.mafs.net
